From Uncharted Waters to Familiar Shores: Navigating the Myriad and Divergent Conceptions of Asia

Call for Papers: 2016 SPAS Graduate Student Conference
on Asian Studies

The School of Pacific and Asian Studies (SPAS) at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM) welcomes papers, performances, and panel proposals for its 27th annual graduate student conference. The conference will be held at the Center for Korean Studies on the UHM campus in Honolulu, HI on March 16-18, 2016. The theme this year is “FROM UNCHARTED WATERS TO FAMILIAR SHORES: NAVIGATING THE MYRIAD AND DIVERGENT CONCEPTIONS OF ASIA.”

As this year’s theme indicates, we are interested in accepting papers, performances, and panel proposals that continue, change, and/or contest disciplinary and regional approaches to the study of the Asia/Pacific. With this goal in mind, we also encourage those with a background in the arts to apply with performance or paper proposals.

We are especially looking for papers that:

Involve any original research in all areas of Asia and Asian studies
Incorporate interdisciplinary methods and frameworks
Engage comparative studies or transnationalism
Explore new and emerging trends in Asian Studies                                     Critically re-examine existing methodologies or frameworks             Present Asian performance practices

Please complete the application form according to the listed guidelines and instructions, and submit it by JANUARY 20, 2016. The form may be accessed HERE.

Additionally, all accepted papers/panels will have discussants, so presenters should be prepared to submit their papers by FEBRUARY 15, 2016.

In addition to awards for distinguished papers, limited partial travel grants to the conference site may be available.
